Body Mounts

I'm planning on replacing the body mounts on my '87 Ranger extended cab. I've got the kit ready to go. I just need to find the time.

All 6 mounts are bolted from the top side with a nut on the bottom. The forward mounts look easy enough to replace.

Questions:

Do I have to peel back the carpet to remove the bolt(s) for the mid and aft mounts?

Are the mid mounting bolts fastened from inside the cab or the outside along the bottom of the fire wall?

Are these bolts actually studs? Do I need to lift the cab high enough to clear the mounts between the chassis and the stud?

BTW- The new mounts are urethane replacements, (stock height). Many of you have experience installing body lifts on firsts generation trucks. I'm hoping you could help clarify this.

Thanks.

I cant remember having carpet in mine but theres a bolt pretty much in the center of the floor pan its towards the front a bit more than center though. theres a little cap bolted on over the bolt to take off and then the bolt is right under that cap. and no studs its bolts

i want to do this as well... where did you get your kit?

i want to do this, but just wish it didn't require tearing out my interior...

Once you get the bolts out you have to drive the bottom part out.. I just did a bushing swap myself.. The easiest thing to do is make a puller.. I made one out of a gas bottle cap. cut it so it is shallow enough to put the bolt through and drill a hole big enough for the bolt on the center end... Hope this helps..

You don't have to take the interior out... Just take off the threshhold molding. pull the carpet back enough to pull the plugs and deal with the bolts and BAM! You are done!

Thanks for clearing this up, and thanks for the tips.

My carpeting is a little tattered anyway. I scored a large roll of 1/2 inch thick, closed core urethane foam matting (free!). I was planning to substitute it for the burlap bullshit that's under the carpet now. There's more then enough to cover the floor, fire wall, aft bulkhead and the ceiling. Replacing the body mounts will give me an opportunity to do the floor.

baxtej44- The body mounts are from Energy Suspension, part number 4.4103. The kit is for first generation Ranger king cabs, stock mount replacements. It is not a lift. I don't know if the mounts on a regular cab are different.

the bed won't be much of a problem. the 2 at the front of the cab will be a bear, unless you're real lucky and they haven't rusted much. if you have to drill them out, no big deal, just go to the hardware and get some grade 8 bolts, nuts, and washers and mount the new ones in. just so you know.
good luck.

i just cut through the metal sleeve that the bolts runs through by setting my sawzall blade on top of the body bracket and cutting. the bottm side literally falls out when done this way. it cut the rubber like butter and the sleeve like slightly-harder butter

I've replaced the body mounts under the cab. The job took me 12 hours. I fashioned a tool exactly like multiranger described above, only I cut a strip off the side to fit a 21mm wrench. This tool worked great for the mid and aft mounts. For the fwd mounts, I ground the heads off the bolts. I was careful not to damage the sleeve. After removal, the sleeves were reamed to allow M12 bolts to slip through without hanging up. I installed the new fwd mounts with the bolts running from top to bottom, (the way it should have been).

What are the torque specs for the mounts? It's not in my manual.
