Hello - I have jumped into a ranger build full on. I built an 8.8 explorer rear with a Yukon limited slip & 4.10 gear. The 5.0 out of the explorer is .030 over now & a rotating short block on the stand currently. I found an AOD that me & a buddy are going to tear down this weekend to install the advanced adapter housing & rear shaft into. I even lucked into a 4.10 ring & pinion with bearing kit for the front from FB market place for cheap. Finding a solid truck to put all of the pieces into has been more of a challenge
I have 2 rangers currently & picking up a third next weekend. The first i bought is a 90 reg cab 4.0 4x4 auto the frame & body panels are solid but the windshield leaked & destroyed the floor & base of A-post. I was bummed out by this discovery so I found a 90 xtra cab 2.9 auto 4x4 not running that I thought was a solid base for a build but quickly discovered that the frame was less than great behind the fuel tank. So the one i am going to get next week is a 91 reg cab 2wd long bed again not running.
My plan now is to go back to my original 90 reg cab & swap the cab with the 2wd truck. I have read a few threads about the horrors of cab swaps with different years & 2wd to 4wd, but since I am already doing an engine & trans swap, the cab should be a breeze right? I need to figure out the transfer case shift motor controls or change over to a mud stick shifter somehow but I am thinking that I will use the cab wiring from the 2wd since the 5.0 will be run off a divorced wiring harness & holley terminator X. I looked at using a painless wiring harness & an A9L controller but the thought of keeping all of the emissions working makes my head hurt. Have any of you taken on this kind of project? Please share the pit falls that are awaiting me.
