so i built my truck last summer/winter.
runs 10psi on stock motor.
had what was supposed to be a garret turbo but didnt
say garret on it.
ran amazing all this time and a few weeks ago i noticed a small
squealing at a steady rpm range coming from my turbo.
woke up this morning to go get breakfast. was going up the road and
noticed my boost wasnt building as fast as normal. so i got on it a bit and
a horrible sound coming from my turbo sounding like a atmospheric wastegate
opening. im only builing a total of 3-4 psi now. im guessing peice of shit turbo
but could oil be a problem? i have a oil adapter from oil filter that take oil to my turbo. it gets oil great. i have a garret turbo from my brother off of a Xr4Ti.... but i do not want to put it on a ruin it too....

2nd question. can the garret turbo be ran without having the coolant ran to it? my origional turbo is oil cooled, the Xr4Ti is oil+coolant.... am i able to run it without hooking it up to coolant?

if i take the garret turbo apart, does it need a rebuild kit to put it back together without it leaking?

Please Help... lol

check wastegate spring is not damaged or broken.

absolutely not. you need the coolant.

not necessary, but recomended as you will probably break a seal or two taking it apart.

Thanks. yea i baught a new wastegate spring a few days ago before this even happend so just waiting for it to come in the mail.
im almost possitive its the turbo though. its making some pretty horrible noises.

Actually you don't NEED coolant in the turbo. There are plenty of non-watercooled turbos. My holset is. In fact every holset is as are many garretts.

You do however need oil. If someone is asking if they need oil, they shouldn't touch a turbo.

yea i know i need oil :icon_surprised:

would i be breaking any major seals that would have to be replace if i removed the compressor housing from the turbo? i want to put my .50 trim compressor housing onto my garret turbo due to the garret turbo having that weird adapter off of the Xr4Ti

no that shouldn't be a problem. just don't drop it with the housing off.

If you've ever sut a garrett water cooled center housing apart
you'd question bothering to hook up the water to it.

The water doesn't really cool the part of the center housing
that needs to be cooled most.

what area is that you ask? there are three oil "drains" inside
the center housing, the middle onedrains the oil from the "inboard"
side of both the turbine side and compressor side bearing

There is a compressor side drain for the compressor side bearing
(and the thrust bearing) and there is an oil drain on the turbine
side of the turbine side bearing. THAT is the drain passage where
the oil burns into "Coke" and eventually obstructs that passage leading
to half the oil from the turbine side bearing being forced out into the
turbine housing and mixing with the exhaust....

that area is NOT cooled by the water.

Frankly I think that's the only area that NEEDS to be cooled...

I was just thinking to myself the other day I hadn't seen you around in a while.

Didn't you put a china-bay turbo on your truck?

Let us know what you find.

If it's like most china bay turbos, the parts will not interchange with a real Garrett. So be careful about swapping parts between the two.

And also, the consensous on turboford is that it is NOT necessary to hook the water up to the turbo. That being said, I did do it on mine because I don't like taking chances.

if you do try to switch housings make sure the paper gasket is still in tact before putting back together
