so the other day i found out i blew a head gasket in my 88 ranger.
now the question is should i just buy new gaskets or replace the whole engine. If i replace the engine should i just drop another 2.9L in or swap a 4.0.
If i do drop a 4.0 how hard is it do i have to get anything else except the 4.0(like the tranny)?

you'll need to answer a few questions for yourself.

How long do you plan on keeping this truck??? how well is the body and frame??

If I had to do it again....& I can't speak for you. Buut...If I was in your position with my truck. I'd be seriously concider the swap of the 4.0.
1 Reason is there are whole bunch more of bolt on "upgrades"...to get what ever you want. the 2.9 is limited as to just a few items.
2 the 4.0 is going to address most of the trouble spots the 2.9 didn't, one you're aware of, weak heads, & poor oil distribution to the upper end, & better power band
3 in the event/probabilty you need parts the 4.0 is far more available. the 2.9 is getting abit hard to find running well.

there is lots of info about this swap in the tech libarary, to help you understand & be better informed...http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/4L_Conversion.html

If you like what you got...& are happy with it...by all means stick with 2.9.
