blew the 4.0L in my 2005 xlt, found a 2004 4.0 for really cheap. will the year difference still be compatible. I know the 2006 will fit, but I cant find any of those or a 2005. Other than getting an ecu with my setup, will the 2004 4.0L work?

It will work and you can keep the factory ECU from your truck.

thanks! alot of the info i have been finding has been very conflicting. lots of yes and no's! but becasue it's a 2005 and the new engine would be a 2004, would I have any smog issues since I live in CA?

Shouldn't cause a problem. The biggest changes to the 4.0 from 04 to 05 were in the software on the computer.

sounds great! so should i run the 2005 computer or take the 2004 and use that one?

Use the 2005 computer. Switching computers will cause you a number of issues, especially with PATS and emissions.

Eeeewwww I forgot about PATS....

sweet! thanx! i dont even know what pats is but i will deffinately keep the 2005 ecu and run that with the 2004 4L engine! thanx for the help! much appreciated!!!! should i expect any other issues or is it smooth sailing form here?

oh and one more question, will the connectors that are on the engine harness work with the connections at the fuse box/dash harness?

Should still be identical.

PATS = Passive Anti Theft System It works using a transciever built into the security module. When the correct key is inserted into the ignition a signal is sent from an antenna around the ignition tumbler to a computer chip built into the key. The key echoes back the correct code that tells the computer its the correct key. If the wrong key is inserted or someone attempts to bypass the ignition, the security module wont engage the starter or fire the injectors.
