The blower motor on my 2007 Ranger 3.0 will sometimes work in all positions, sometimes work in the low or hi position.

The question is, when the resistor is going bad does it fail and default to those two positions or does it sometimes work/sometimes not work before it fails compleatly??

Or would that be a bad connection somewhere???

If the resistor fails completely it will only work in low/high...if yours is sporadic it may be the resistor is on the way out or, as you say, a bad connection...

I found mine had a bad connection inside the motor housing and replaced it with one from a 96 Ranger...same fan, same wiring...not sure if they changed because I have yet to see anything newer than a 2000 in the junkyards...

Might be worth a shot at checking the wires under the hood...or even pulling the resistor (not sure if they are in the same place, but they should have moved them about 20 years ago)...

Having just performed some work on my brother's 1993 Ranger, I thought that I would make a few comments...

The other day he mentioned that smoke blew out through his air vents. My first thought was that his heater core was bad. After poking my head into his truck, there was no coolant smell, but rather a burnt leaf/electrical smell. After removing his blower motor and blower motor resistor, I'll tell you, the blower motor housing, the blower motor, the blower motor snorkel, and resistor were completely full of leaves. Anyways, I have read that leaves can cause the resistor to short out and prevent all fan speeds from working.

You need to get in there and do what I did (start with removal of the resistor) and look for burnt stuff. I'll try to post some pics I took in a few minutes.

First pic...

one of the tabs on the plug that hooks up on the blower motor was broke on mine stuck it against the air cleaner box to hold it in. now it works all the time. try turning motor on and wiggling the wire at the motor. just a thought.

Dumb question...what is the point of this "rubber snorkel" that goes from the blower motor itself to the blower motor housing? Is that supposed to be for motor cooling purposes? Seems like a really bad design. Looks like they should have pointed the snorkel intake to the top of the blower motor housing.

The snorkel is for cooling the motor...you will notice that the case is closed to keep water out so it needs ventilation...what better way to ventilate it than to use the blower attached to it!

That's what I figured. Still don't know why they would have the snorkel suck air from the bottom of the housing though, since debris would build up at the bottom (like it did in my case).

See this old thread....

Thank you very much for reminding me to clean my A/C/Heater ducting....I kept reminding myself last year to remove the heater blower motor and resistor, but then I needed to prioritize other work. Just in case you forget to clean your A/C/heater unit, check this thread......

'Nuff said.......

Holy crap dude! That sucks. Another recommendation I would give to Ford to prevent this sort of thing...install some sort of boot around the wiper arm splines to keep debris from getting under the cowl. The size of some of the leaves that I found in my brother's Ranger were obviously too large to get down into the motor housing any other way...

Thanks everyone!

I'll take a look under the hood this weekend & clean out that area..

Sorry about the late reply but my computer was down...
