So I took the b2 out into the mountains for the first time since the axle swap. Got close to being back in town when I noticed a big power loss. Oil pressure started dropping. Stopped at the gas station on the edge of town, checked and the oil was low so I bought and added enough to correct the level. Started it up and tried to get it home, it started hammering, knocking, and making a lot of noise. Went about 4-5 blocks and klunk. Just stopped cold, pushed it into a parking lot for the time being.

Won't even crank over. That's fine, my new 4.0 has been waiting for just this occasion.

Taking bets, what do you think it is?

Hmm, my guess would be the hampster fell off the wheel. LOL.

My poor B2 keeps limping along, everything is falling apart around the engine and the rest of the drive train. My B2 needs a new body, engine and the rest of the drive train seems fine.

As many times I ran low on oil or overheated mine my guess is you overreved it out playing and probably fried a connecting rod bearing and on your way back it finally broke loose and punched a hole in the block or oilpan. loud knocking hammering is almost allways a connecting rod.

That's exactly my thought, connecting rod. But I wouldn't be shocked to find bearing shrapnel all over the place when I pull it apart. Probably massive play in rod bearings. Not sure when I'll get to it, I need to find shopspace to do my motor swap.

It was about 1½ qts low, after being at the proper level when I left 4 hours earlier.

I looked it over for a while after it happened, and I didn't see any rods holes in the block or pan. That was my first fear.

Holes in the block are rare at normal speeds. Spun bearings, especially after an oil loss, are not. Expect to repair or buy a crank and a rod or two.

Your probably right. But I'm not fixing the 2.8, I have a 12/92 ohv 4.0 from an explorer I'll be putting in. I just plan to tear it down out of curiosity, and to show a friend who has never worked on a motor before how to tear one down. He's a wrenching fool like me, but has been cursed with reliable engines so has only had the opportunity to learn suspension, axles, and wiring.

Don't forget to post your tear down on here as well, for the curiosity of the rest of us TRS members LOL.

EDIT:
Wait this reminds me, I need to go check the oil in my B2 as well.
