I have been told that there is a way to check if Cyl Head is Warped by doing a bleed down check.

Have no idea how to do or what tools are needed.

Anybody know how to do and what tools I will need?

Thanks

im pretty sure you just get a compression tester and get the cylinder to as much compression it can get and see how long it takes to loose a lot of it, if it dosent take a long time to loose the bulk of the pressure, u got a bad cylinder and/or headgasket/head.

One or the other

Either you have been misinformed or you misunderstood.. If the cylinder head is warped won't show up on a leak down check.

Warped cylinder heads are of no consequence WHATEVER to a running engine.. The head bolts hold the head tightly to the block. One cannot tell if the head has warped until the head is taken off of the engine. At that time a STRAIGHT EDGE is placed on the bottom of the head and if it doesn't fit perfectly, the head guy will advise milling the head back to straight again.

I just install the warped head and when tightening the head bolts the head is straitened back out and has always worked fine just as it did before.

Why would you be interested in a warped head? Are you having problems?

My Interest in Warped Head.

Interest is motivated by the vehicle having been overtemped 4 times. Not dramatically however, still overtemped.

The latest time about 8 months ago.

Since this time, the motor seems to miss however, still runs good other than a intermittent shudder.

Maybe the wrong decision but put head gasket sealer in the coolant and the shudder improved. This led me to believe that it blew or partially blew a head gasket.

In turn, again maybe wrong, I have since thought that maybe the head got warped.

I should have asked the question before but since I am having a tranny problem now, decided to fix the shudder, the tranny and the power steering leak at the same time.

Not sure which way the fix the shudder, tranny yet, but I can change the steering box with a high level of confidence.

If it was a helicopter, I could fix all with confidence.

Any advice is better than where I am now.

Thanks

Ok Advice

Head gasket problems are shown by coolant in the oil...or by coolant running out the gasket between the block and the head.. Or most common and worst of all by compression getting into the coolant abd blowing coolant out the overflow and overheating.

I have never heard of a head warping and showing the warp until the head was removed from the block.. In your case I doubt a warped head. Also I would never consider whatever it was you put in the coolant to stop an unknown problem.

Perhaps you should give a more detailed description of the intermittant shudder...how, when, where, rrpm at the time, pop-crackle at the time, etc.. Anythingyou can think of.

We'd like to know how hot it got and how long ago. Overheating is shown by puking out the coolant.. If it didn't PUKE it didn't get hot! Period!
The engine will withstand 300* easily..the coolant only 235*..

First guess on the shudder would be tuneup.

Getting Hot

Two previous hot's equaled the blow out of freeze plug.

Third time was lower hose blew.

Fourth time was upper hose blew.

All the things you mentioned did not happen however, was told that it could have been between two cylinders which would intermittently put water into the fuel. Since the problem is/was intermittent, seemed reasonable but not necessarily logical.

I think I will get it running again, i.e. tranny and go through the whole enchilada and repost.

I will keep you posted.

1994 Exploder

Haven't got to the tranny yet but have the car at home.

At this point, I can tell you this.

Initially, when you start up the vehicle it runs fairly smooth hot/cold.

In less than two minutes, it starts to run rough. On acceleration, it tends to decrease however, when you let off the pedal, it continues with the rough running.

It is not significant however, it is there and noticeable. Before the tranny went out, you would feel the same thing.

When cruising down the road, it would feel like an intermittent misfire.

Hope this help for a diagnosis.

Will be working on this while I tinker with the tranny,

Have a feeling will need to rebuild or get another one.

Cel?

If you are referring to Check Engine Light, Nothing.

The vehicle also passed California Smog Check with the problem.

Need additional help.

While waiting for help to install tranny, I did a little more checking.

As I mentioned before, engine seemed to have a low level miss when got warm.

I decided to pull the plugs this morning and found the following.

All three plugs on one side have a orange tint (rust color). Bear in mind I have a red and green eye defect so may be a different. Won't be able to verify until family returns from Hawaii next week.

On the other side, plugs are pretty dirty and one of the plugs is missing the insulator.

The wear on the plugs are fairly consistent.

Questions:

1. If the color on the three is in fact rust color, does this indicate a head gasket?

2. Is it more probable that the one plug without the insulator is causing the problem.

Any advice would be appreciated.

A HEADs UP !!!

The PickNPulls here in Sacramento have taken in a lot of Explorers under the Clunker Program.

For the most part, the engines have been sprayed with some sort of chemical that precludes getting any of the Main Engine Parts however the rest of the vehicle components are still usable.

If you have a special need that you have been unable to find, I will check for you and let you know how much they run.

I will try to make time to pull the part/parts if you want. I make about one trip a week so let me know.
