After removing the intake I noticed that there was thick black build up, it wasn't gooey it was almost like dirt that was stuffed in all the indents on top of the block, I wish I could take a picture but I'm at work right now, I might upload a picture once I get home.

Has anyone had this issue before and is it something that I should be worried about?

I dug the stuff out as best I could but there is still a little residue as I was worried about knocking it loose into the coolant holes.

Sounds like carbon build up or oil. maybe both!

It sounds like someone didn't change the oil too much or it has a ton of blow by. I would clean it out completely and let it go. Just keep an eye on oil consumption.

I've seen exactly what your describing.. My only thoughts were that the pcv system wasn't working for a while, engine running too cold, poor maintenance, etc, sludge build up, then things get normalized (or the engine runs hot) and the sludge "cooks"

I appreciate the replies, I just cleaned out as much as I could and I'm about to put the thing back together, wish me luck :P
