"Big Darla" Build Thread

I will say this, its a cool looking truck, and its original. but im sorry, some of the fab work is a hack job. if this is your trial rig, i understand. but if you drive this on the road as a DD, i fear for you man.

Please O god of fab work, tell us specific examples of where this is hacked?

I See perfectly fine fab work

The truck is solid on every aspect of safety. Please explain why you would fear for me? Dont get me wrong I literally hacked the back of the truck off but I guarantee shes not going anywhere.

I used to be a metal fab, making anything from automotive parts, to beer signs.

im trying to decide... its a tie between the angle iron holding the rear shackles, the hole cut in the box instead of relocating shocks, or the clean bed bob. my personal favorite i think though, is the duct tape intake. :icon_thumby:

Im sure its plenty strong, but its way to thrown together. like having a gas tank sitting in the back of the truck, next to an unsecured tire, screams for fuel EVERYWHERE. and was a grommet put in the hole for the fuel lines in the bed? id be scared if it wasnt. Like i said before, its a good looking truck, and if it work's for you, awesome. but if i saw that truck for sale, i wouldnt touch it. too much work making it proper.

AGAIN, not trying to be an asshole, and i like the truck, just not my style. ask anybody, or look at my 06, im a stickler for things done right. if they arent, i'm not happy.

the rear crossmember- does not look as though the metal was cleaned at all prior to welding=dirty, pourus, brittle welds.
the angle iron bumper that resembles a noodle- would have been better off using square tube or boxing it in with thicker material and
the shackle hangers-could use boxing in/gussets
not criticizing just observing:icon_thumby:

x2 on the noodle.

i can also add the fact that the welds for the gas tank hardly look welded. you can't expect to just burn through paint and get a good weld.

surface prep is key, you should have learned that when your bondo fell off.

many people cut holes in the box to fit the shocks in... thats what happens with long shock if you want the full travel out of them. ever notice the hood of trophy trucks/ monster trucks? the shock towers show through.

as for the bed bob who cares it a trail truck it'll be destroyed after a few trips anyways, and then the shackles... meh they could use more bracing but that'll come in time im sure. and plus you'll only rip them off once lol then it'll get done right

sounds fun, torn shackle in the middle of moab. let me know how that day goes!:icon_thumby::icon_rofl::icon_rofl:

have you ever driven a truck without shackles? its not as bad as you would think in fact its not bad at all we've had field trucks that we never bothered putting shackles on and ive had them up to 80-90 km an hr on backroads i drifted it and jumped it only problem i ever had was the rear end being lower one the eyes of the springs punched through the box and got stuck in it.

ive also driven my ranger 40 km home after ripping the front mount for my drivers side leaf spring off the frame i was still able to do 80km an hour then drive the truck back to school 40km again then to the shop after school to put in the new mount.

like i said im sure it isnt ideal but at the same time its not really a big deal either its his truck and if he has any problems with it thats his problem lol.

the hole cut in the box instead of relocating shocks,
very common and works well.

and was a grommet put in the hole for the fuel lines in the bed? id be scared if it wasnt.
in the text it says he put one in

i stand corrected about the grommet. still would rather relocate the shocks further down the axle and even have them cross, before cutting up the bed, especially on a support bar. thats just lazy.

trouble is, with his setup, the shackle is outside the box, so if it tears, it will drop the truck to the bump stop. i can only imagine driving out of a offroad park like that. when it comes to stuff like that, it makes sense to build it so it wont break. saves headaches and more work later down the road.

If your gonna do it, do it right the first time :icon_thumby:

06rangerxlt I sure hope you didnt subscribe to my thread because I really dont want you on my thread.

If my shackle breaks the truck will be sitting on my shocks or if I wanted to I could fold the shackle as far forward and run it under the bumper...
still would rather relocate the shocks further down the axle
Why would you run the shocks lower? so you can get hung up on rocks and the trail?

Meh, truck looks like it works well with the shit it has. I already made my comment on the bed but the rear shocks thing is getting a bit ridiculous...

The only way to have long travel shocks in the rear without cutting up the bed is to run a cantilever setup.

Every prerunner out there has a hole in the bed, or no bed floor at all....

As for the gas tank, I can go through and point out more than just 1 truck running the tank in the bed.

The one thing I may change would be the shackles and thats it, and besides the whole point of building a truck is finding its weaknesses and fixing them, and it seems he is doing that
