how can i get better gas millage out of it.

Well, there's the obvious. Spark Plugs, Plug wires, Cap & Rotor, Fuel Filter, Air Filter, Oil Change, Properly Inflated Tires, Properly Adjusted Timing.

Tried any of these?

basically all except fuel filter and cab and rotor

If it's not missing out and popping and jumping then the only hope you have is changing your driving style..or using shorter tires.

When my '84 BII had that engine and transmission, I could get 23-25mpg by driving it at 55 on the highway (It was built in days of the 55mph speed limit -maybe that had some bearing on the driveline design) faster or slower speeds brought the mileage down to around 16-18.

You can run a leaner jet. Have you ever rebuilt the carb? What mileage are you currently getting? Are you still running the sock EECIV engine control system? If so a Duraspark swap would also help.
