Is there a best year first gen explorer and why?

They're all basically the same. The 93s and 94s have 4 wheel ABS as opposed to 2 wheel (rear) ABS. The 93s and 94s also had 160 hp instead of 155. The difference is pretty negligible though. 94s also had r134a air conditioning instead of R12. Those are the only differences I can think of. Other than that, they're exactly the same.

yeah, its mostly body style, they all get the same terrible gas mileage and good durability, OH, and the same roll-over rating... except the first gens, those got pretty bad ratings, but who is counting? haha

I'd got with a new one if you could afford it, but first gens are nice aswell =) basic = simple = easy to fix = fun!
