im trying to find the easyest way to replace my oil pan gasket and rear main seal, im not sure if i can do it with the motor in the truck or if i should pull the motor. any help would be great! and does anyone know of a place that does a rebuild kit for a 86 2.3l for a ranger?

this has been covered before. search

its easiest to do if you remove the engine. while it IS possible to do both seals if you remove the transmission, getting the oil pan out is a complete pain in the ass

best way?

make someone else do it:D

did the search man and didnt get anything to come up that sounded like what i needed, thats why i asked. I never ask unless i cant find the info im wanting. thanks for the help. just trying to figure out easiest way to get it done with out being able to pull the motor and its hovering right about freezing at the wormest part of the day here right now too.

if you have to do it outside, that's a pain in the rear... if the rear main isn't leaking horribly you might be able to limp yourself along for a while by just tightening the oil pan bolts.

I just did it and it is easy if the trans isn't in the way. I was replacing clutch and rear seal so trans was coming out anyway. Pan won't come out but will be hanging down far enough to fish new gasket in. Just fit it into the groove in the pan and bolt it back up. Unless your pan is different, mine was the cast aluminum one on a 96 2.3. Hope this helps.

thanks for the tips, i might just do my oil pan for now and see where that gets me. does any one know of a place that does a decent rebuild kit for the 2.3? and will anything off a 2.0 focus motor work on the 2.3?

While your there (if you can get to it ) I would replace the pick up tube to the oil pump.

if you just scrape the goo out of the pickup screen it should be fine, that's the main problem these things have when they have low oil pressure

you have to lift the motor up like 2-3 inches to get the oil pan off. make sure you put the #1 piston on tdc because the pan will slide out a lot easier. definally would at least replace the pickup if not the pump to.
