im new to this site and im a ranger man i ve been reading a lot and worked on many vehical. but no swaps going to make a v8 swap i cant make my mind up on what set up to do . i have a 1989 4x4 2.9. auto ..should i use the f150 or bronco 5.0 or should i use the musting 5.0 thanks for your opinions

Mustang motor and ecu/harness is usually the preferred choice. AOD and a 205 is a pretty good setup....

Depends what you are doing with it. The 89ish and up mustang based electonics are the way to go being it's mass air. If you have the whole car as a donor it should be a roller cam as well. Mass air is preferred because it can adapt (to an cetain extent) to performance modifications where the older speed density can't. If you are crawling and won't see deep mud, any truck 4 speed (t18, t19 or np435) is a good choice or ZF 5 speed if it will see the interstate; all of them have a deep 1st gear. You can use the M5OD-R2 from the F150 but I don't consider it as an offroad unit...daily driver sure. Any deep mud an automatic will be best for the fact there is no clutch to get wet and slip. The C6 will be king for holding power, C4 will be fine, aod isn't a bad choice either especially if it need to be driven at speed. T-cases the NP205 is the strongest factory offering, lousy low range but the V8 will make up for it. If you want lighter and better gearing the next best would be the NP208. There are more cases that will bolt up but those are the smallest and best fitting.

Get the AOD from an f150, last time checked, I didn't see any 4x4 mustangs. 205, check the 70's f150's and 250's...

And BTW, you will need to mod the adapter housing where the Tcase bolts to the trans(205 only) for the shift rail...here is a pic of one i modded...

Also, if you run an AOD, you will want the A9P computer. The A9L will work, but the A9P spark table is better suited for an AOD.

Mustang harness year won't matter, as you will use the Ranger fuel pump relay anyway.
Specific differences with the Mustang ECUs are the automatic one increase timing at a lower RPM.

what year models mustangs can i get (5.0) what about the 5.0 explorer. thanks guy for the info. it is really helping . i see some people got jokes

what is the best motor mounts to use i see there are a few to choose fro.m

89-95 mustang (94-95 mustang are a little different on the wiring), 96-01 explorer motors, but you will have to change the fuek rails and swap to dizzy on the ex motors (harness on these are more complicated but still usable)...

Mounts depends on who you ask, I myself find the stock ranger mounts with a plate bolted to the block is the easiest and gives you all the adjustment needed without pulling the motor...
