Best oil?

Fram is the one of, if not the biggest filter manufacturers in the US. There are millions of vehicles on the road right now with Fram filters installed. Strangely, there is no epidemic of engines seizing on every street corner.

That being said, there are better filters out there for the money and I don't use Fram.

No but there are other filters for the same price or less that are far better, motorcraft and Purolator filters are both cheaper at my local Walmart than a fram.

My familys cars get motorcraft filters all around, dads f150 get super tech dino oil because it burns its, moms E350 get motorcraft or what ever full synth is on sale. My 87 gets what ever, last change it was super tech full synth because it was cheap, but usually motorcraft because it is cheap.

I have never seen any oil filter with a cardboard anti-drainback valve. You're thinking of cardboard end caps, which is a different part of the filter. Cheap filters use a nitrile rubber anti-drainback valve, better ones use a silicone valve. I think the Motorcraft FL-1A has a nitrile one IIRC. The FL-820S used on the 4.0 SOHC definitely has a silicone valve (in fact, the "S" at the end of the part number stands for silicone -- indicating it has a silicone ADBV).

Yeah. Sorry had my parts confused. I knew what I was thinking. I meant to say the Motorcraft has metal end caps and cheaper filters have the cardboard.

My parents use fram on their caravans. None have seemed to last more than 190k miles without major engine issues.

I keep telling them go not use fram, but it is what it is.

I'm not going to start another Fram argument but suffice it to say that while a Fram won't necessarily blow up your engine, there are better quality filters available for the same money or less. Like Motorcraft. I simply use Motorcrafts on the family Fords and AC's on my parents' Cadillacs.
The wife has a Chrysler minivan but Wal-Mart charges an arm and a leg for Mopar filters so I use Purolator PureONE filters on it.

2005, 2.3 manual
been a work truck since new, lots of time on the freeway.
always used Mobil 1 5-20 synthetic with Mobil 1 filters on about a 6000 miles change interval.
just hit 242,000 miles, used about a 1-1/2 quarts in last 7000 miles.

I generally use whatever is on sale. Last change I used Valvoline high mileage 10w30. Next go around I'll probably grab a synthetic jug. I was a little low on funds to do it last time.

THIS, there is no "best" oil. Since oil has to conform to standards like SM energy conserving, even conventional is very good.

The "best" oil is the oil that convinces you to buy it over, and over. Brand loyalty!

not entirely true you are buying the different additives that are put into the oil and every brand is slightly different....

Oil is so good that you don't have to worry about those additives, for a street car, most oil is changed out well before it's exhausted.

The oil filter, I consider more important than the oil itself, unless you got oil leaks or consumption issues. I buy top of the line Mobil1 filters and change them every-other oil change. So I change othe oil around 7/8',000 miles and the filter gets near the rated 15,000 miles of service.

Between these 3, which ever one is on sale - Valvoline, Castrol, Motorcraft
