My younger brother is in the market for a 4 banger ranger, he is looking for the max in mileage.
He is planing to add an air intake, run synthetic oil.
I'm curious if any one has any other helpful tips that may help, best tire size, gear ratios, that kind of stuff.
Thanks.

2wd, reg cab, manual trans, as small of tires as you can stand to look at. Gear ratio depends on tire size. If he's going to go really small on the tires (less than 24" diameter), he'll want something like a 3.27 gear. Larger tires, like215/70R15, will need a deeper gear like a 3.73. With 4x4 size tires he'll want 4.10.

Air intake will only help by removing the weight in your wallet.

full-size pickup tires (235-15) roll about as well
as anything, are less trouble and last longer
than small tires, and are better on gravel.
and 3.73 gears work with them, but you
won't use overdrive much (a good thing).
