Is this normal? I recently replaced it, because it was making a clicking sound and moving MUCH more than it is now, but should it be doing this anyways???
thanks guys.

Edit: What if one of the bearings were gone in one of the other pulleys? would this cause a very quick tightening and loosening of the belt, causing the tensioner to adjust rapidly?

mine does the same thing. im not sure it its normal or not but id be interested to hear others opinions

I got an OHV Ranger, and i can look on tuesday. But I checked my Xterra with a non supercharged 3.3, and it twitches a very little bit on that.

Mine is a 92, may not apply.

There is a second idler pulley on mine below the alternator. it also needed work at the same time as the main tensioner did.

I would say yes look around at the others there and see what else may need service. and yes a second bearing in need of service would cause the tensioner to bounce in my opinion.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the answers, hoping someone with a SOHC 4.0l will pipe in. Looking at my old mans Tundra, no wobble there, every thing is solid....

i have the first year ranger sohc ill check my bearings tomorrow morning and see what mine are doing. id say its normal but its worth investigating

Thanks wood, I appreciate it. I've had my truck for a little over two months now and I've already replace the fuel pump and this, with only 62,xxx Km's so I'm hoping I'm not off to another part to fix. Had enough of that with my 1990 Cavalier Z24 I traded in for the ranger :annoyed:

As long as there is no side belt wear and no noise it should be normal. The thing has a spring in it to compensate for SLACK in the belt as different boltons require some extra tension to operate. These belts are so long that some stretch develops in them as certain things happen to the boltons.
The older v-belts were all much shorter and the stretch was/is negligable. So the spring tightner had to be added to use only one belt.

Thanks Big Jim, I guess the old one was just worn out. Good to have that peace of mind. Cheers guys
