Hello everyone, I have a 1993 Ford Ranger 3.0 and my belt is really loose. Can I adjust the tension or will I have to replace my tensioner and its pulley?

If you have a tensioner that uses spring pressure to keep the belt tight, you'll need a new tesioner. The pulley usually comes with it.

If your tensioner is the old style that uses a bolt to increase the pressure or a pinch bolt and a slide arm, you'll need the diagram with the proper a.ount of belt play and where to measure it from. Measurement location makes a difference.

Thank you for the reply 👍. I there a way for me to be certain if it is spring pressurized or if I can adjust it manually? I have looked all over google and I can’t seem to figure it out. Thanks again 🤙

I think the easiest way would be to get on an auto parts web site and look it up. It should be fairly obvious then by the picture. Auto Zone, Pep Boys, Advance Auto Parts, and NAPA should have it.

I'll look it up too so I can see what it looks like. If it looks like the one on my 2011 and the 1998 I used to have, it has a spring in the unit. I've never worked on a 1993, thus my covering all the bases. I don't know when they started using the spring tensioner.

It has the spring type. If your engine bay is like mine, you'll want the tool for it. It looks like a long flat bar with a square post for a socket on one end and a square hole to put your rarchet in on the other.

also.....if your belt is just worn out or the improper one ....changing the tensioner wont fix it for long. some of them have a range indicator on them....if it is stroked out you need a belt or possible some pully/bearings.

what engine you have could also determine what kind of tensioner. my 97 4.0 has the spring tensioner, and other than having to take off all the aircleaner and ductwork, it is not too bad. I have used a 3/8" breaker bar to release the tension on the belt. if you need to replace the tensioner, it is more than likely you will need to replace the belt too. bite the bullet and get both, no matter which system you have, but it is highly likely you have the spring tensioner similar or the same as my 97.,

yeah, my 3.0 has the self-tensioning system. i want to say i use a 3/8th breaker bar to move the tensioner back to take the belt on and off but you could probably also just use a 3/8th ratchet.
