belt system questions

im ditching the serp belt system for the time being. wiring issues i dont feel like dealing with, plus the 5.0 sploder from the boneyard is gone... what am i looking fo to retain my stock alt. and power steering. not worried about a/c (yet)

Pretty sure a Crown Vic, Towncar or Marquis 5.0 from 87-91 is what you'll want if you want to keep your alternator and P/S. This is the accessory drive I used on my 89, all I had to do was lengthen the alternator wiring to reach the driver's side of the motor. The P/S lines bolted right up.

Some big old '80's cars (I have heard crown vics) have a really simple serp setup. Dunno if it is technically a serpantine setup, but it uses a ribbed belt like one.

Get some brackets from a mid 80 crown vic, dime a dozen cars.
You can use your pump and alt.

That's the same setup I used, from an 88 Vic.Make sure you use the tubular stiffener for the alternator bracket that bolts to the intake manifold at the 2nd bolt from the front. You'll need that intake bolt too.

So how well did this accessory drive work? It's whats on the two engines I just bought, but it looks pretty deep because of the dual belts. Another somewhat odd thing about it, it looks like if I don't run A/C, I'll have no belts or pulleys at all on the passenger side of the engine giving it an unbalanced look.

Is the battery on the passenger side in '89?

Worked great for me. And yea, my battery WAS on the passenger side (it's in the bed now:D) You wil have to sink the radiator into the core support to clear the water pump pulley and fans.( I used twin 10" fans)

There is one (with another stud) for the AC compressor too, if you think you might put AC on it someday you might make sure you snag that too.

Yeah only one belt on one side of the engine. I like its simplicity compared to having 5 miles of belt snaking clear across the front of the truck.

What rad are you running? Do you have any pics?

I used a Griffin 27.5 X 15.5" bought from Summit Racing. It fits in the core support after some minor metal removal, but needed the outlet cut off and rotated 90* to make the hose I cobbled together jump up over the frame rail. In retrospect, I would have used the Duff radiator instead, it's the same size, but doesn't need the outlet rotated as far as I know. I also would have used an inline hose filler in the top hose. These radiators are fine for most applications, but forget about towing something heavy, it's not big enough to do that. I can't load pics here, but there's some here: http://s.125.photobucket.com/albums/p53/baddad457/ Look on pages 2, 8 & 10

Thanks for the link, pics always help.

I don't plan on towing much of anything with my Ranger, it isn't enough horse to pull the wagon I pull anyway. :icon_thumby:

Is it like this one?

It might be a different model or something, but which outlet did you have to rotate?

That's the one. There's only one outlet :D The coolant goes in the top, out the bottom. If you'll notice in that pic the oulet would point directly at the power steering pulley. I cut it off and rotated it so it was pointing over the frame rail. The trouble I ran into after cutting it was finding someone who would weld it back on, not an easy chore with aluminum, and especially with a new radiator. Plus the tanks are epoxied to the core. The guy who did do the deed is a master craftsman when it comes to stuff like this.

Gotta be one in every crowd. :icon_twisted:

With my radiator support moved up 3" it won't be in the same place as either yours or the OP's, personally I think I will just play it by ear.

looks like i'll be dealing without a/c for the timer being. did u use the vics p/s pump or the ranger? (in respect to which pulley you used). will the a/c lines make it all the way to the pass side? im ok with lengthening alt wires, no biggie.

I am going to try the vic pump, my Ranger pump was a known whiner. I gotta use the vic pulley, my Ranger was originally a V belt setup. No A/C, my alternator reached fine (it has been riding around on the DS inner fender) but the wiring wasn't original.
