I just put a belt on my 87 ranger 2.3. At idle it does not squeal but right before you shift it squeals loudly. Any ideas? First time to change belts. Done spark plugs and other small things for years.

Thanks in advance
Jonathan

Sounds like the tensioner is bad. They have to be replaced sometimes. That is why you are squealing with a new belt.

SOmething at high rpms is draggin on the belt enough to slow it down. Like ^^^he said it could be tensioner or alt going bad, ac compressor, or just not adjusted properly.

Or it could be a bad belt. Get it to make the noise and then hit it with some WD-40. If it goes away your belt is no good.

Otherwise you have a bad bearing in something.

C'mon fellas..........he said it's a 2.3L........

it's obviously NOT a bad belt........

he's spinnin the tires........

i gotta go,,,,,,,,,:icon_bounceblue:

As far as I can tell it does not have a tensioner because it seems to tighten off the alternator. It does have an idle pulley would that be the problem? How would you tell if the belt is adjusted properly?

Jonathan

it should have about a half inch of play. . . try spraying some silicon on it while its running, mine likes to squeak if it gets wet, dont know if its bearings in an idler pulley or the belt itself which is relatively new, anyway when it squeaks quick shot of spray silicon shuts it up for now.
