to start this off my explorer will only drive about 3 mph at about 3500 rpm...i've been told tranny issues i believe its rear end issues it i have a 94 ford explorer xlt with the ford 8.8 with 3.73 ratio and limited slip.... driveshaft would spin when in gear but not move truck...in neutral the driveshaft wouldnt spin (with tires on teh ground) jacked up the whole rear end u can spin one tire by hand and the other doesnt spin...spin the pinion yoke/driveshaft it will spin one tire im ost please help me...and here is my rear end findings

well i pulled it all apart today removed everything but the pinion, and attached to the side gears are like 6 plates per side...i wanna say those are the clutch plates (if i remember correctly but not sure) for the LS...and once again if i remember right 3 of the 6 per side should have 2 tabs on it which slide into slots on the carrier.... well i only have one per side and they are closest to the side gear (on each side) i also recovered what seems like the remains of the other tabs in the bottom of the diff...and i see what looks like where the tabs were supposed to be?...i'll post pics in a while to show exactly what im talking about could this be my problem...and i also decided to spin the pinion yoke b4 i removed the axles and it still turned one axle shaft but not the other (this is with it out from the truck and sitting on jack stands) im just lost lol so if u can help me out it'd be super appreciated thanks and i'll get on those pics since they can explain better than i know how lol thanks again

well here are my pics and there is 7 plates per side gear...the first two are the ones opposite the ring gear and the next 4 are the ones closest to the ring gear and and the final pic is of the shreads of those tabs as i call them

opposite ring gear plates

and last the metal shavings (that look like the tabs from the broken plates)

The correct way to put the plates back into the rearend is 1 clutch plate, 2 drive plates, 1 clutch plate, 2 drive plates and 1 clutch plate. then the "S" spring. That is typical of the clutch plates doing what they did. The reason they did that was probably because someone had changed the gear oil out and never put in the additive for the L/S. The additive allows the plated to silp without damaging them. As for the rearend.....if you have the truck in park with the driveshaft connected and you turn one wheel the other side should turn opposite. Now with the drive shaft connected and truck in neutral or driveshaft disconnected and you turn the pinion both tires should turn the same direction. Without limited slip just one tire would turn.

well thiers your problem. lol I just did the same thing with 8.8 in my BII

well would those plates being how they are cause my truck to barely move like it did at the high rpms? i just wanna make sure this is my whole problem versus replace it and then put it back on (since the axle is dropped from teh truck then have to redo it all over again...do u know a place that i can get replacement plates? cuz through ford its like 175 dollars and i know if an aftermarket place makes/sells them it will be so mch cheaper...and what weight gear oil should i use and since i have an LS should i go synthetic or not...and yes i know i need the additive too lol

i read someplace u can also run it with clutch plate, drive plate, clutch plate, drive plate, clutch plate, drive plate, clutch plate to make the LS stronger? is this true or should i stick with the stock setup? and also how hard is it to replace the carrier bearings??? or is it a job left to the experts and mechanics?

now yet another question...i just googles ford differential clutch pack and im coming up with all these mustang rebuild kits...are they the same thing or is the ford racing products not going to work well for my occasional off road use?

Yes they all the same.

What do you think I do with my truck???????? It is the same rearend regardless if it is in a mustang , ranger or explorer. Although the explorer has the 31 spline axles.

sounds good to me..sorry if i sounded snappy/pissy not meant to be that way its just frustrating not knowing where my problem is and everyone keeps telling me the clutch plates being bad wouldnt cause my truck to move...hell some ppl have told me i can take them out and it will still drive....so some ppl are leading me to my tranny...and due to 4x4 not working yet...getting it fixed soon...stupid auto hubs....lol....i cant test it that way but with it all assembles and truck in gear (tires on ground) the driveshaft will spin... and so will teh fronts but that does no good without hubs that lock lol...but it barely moves my truck and only at high rpm...about 3500rpm= about 3 mph then with the tranny in neutral and tires on ground the driveshaft wouldnt spin due to tires trying to catch and move the whole truck....and everything else in the diff looks good....so do u think these plates would cause my issue? or do u think im missing something too

I think you still have a transmission that has bit the dust.
