Batt gauge decided to die

Is this an inside the dash voltmeter? What should be checked/replaced? I really would like to keep things stock, so I wouldn't want to go with an external gauge...

One thing, Before dying, it was reading higher than half way, looked really close to this -- \ --- ... Just got the truck a month and a half ago and it's frikin' hot around here so I didn't really know if this was normal or not...
