any one know off the top of their head the base timing for a 86 ho302 motor? i was told any where from 8 to 12 degrees? :dunno:

Not real sure? :dunno:

I know ford likes to use 10 degrees as a base for dang near everything.... but thats for the fuel injected motors.

Actually if you advance the timing until it pings under a heavy load and the back it off to where it almost does is the best for most ford engines. Are you carbed or FI

Motor is carbed and running a gm style HEI conversion

I was reading an article on pony carbs and yea take it until it almost pings and you want to run the vacuum advance from manifold vacuum. it might take a bit to get the carb and timing correct and do you have the dizzy cap adaptor setup with the larger cap and rotor it helps for the higher voltage the spark dont jump inside the cap between the plug posts and use dielectric on the plug wires.

It's been a while since I messed with my timing, but I am pretty sure I am right around 14 BTDC with that duraspark / GM HEI setup. I have an '85 HO dist w/ steel gear ('87 roller engine with B303 camshaft/GT40s), Accell module, and using a Blaster II TFI-IV coil.

This is a bit of a process but I do it every time I rip my ignition apart (mostly because my timing chain is old as dirt).

Set it at 10*. Put it back together. Go drive it. If you like it, leave it, if it pings go retard it a bit, if you think its a bit doggy go advance it a bit.
