I have a 2000 Off Road Package with a 3.0 FF in it. I just had the oil pump go and I don't want to dump money into a dog of a motor. What could I expect to fork out to put a 5.0 into the truck?

Be as detailed as possible please.

Couple grand, unless you want it really nice. Continue reading here for details.

As much or more as you can afford. That's as "ballpark" as you're going to get. Do the research before buying anything.

If i had stayed with stock manifolds, I would have been right in the $1000 range. It will be much more expensive from salvage yard stuff, i was lucky enough to get a $500 donor truck.

I spend around $500 to freshen the motor and trans: new fluids, plugs, wires, water pump, thermostat, some hoses, etc.

Anyone reading, that's not a joke.

Ah Ted, 10k is for a pretty hot ride. I did the basics for $1200. Freshened engine, mounts, basic exhaust with tri-y headers, that's a carb setup on a 94.

When you start rebuilding the suspension, trans, rear, brakes, fuel supply, gauges, basic interior it adds up fast. Most of these older rangers need attention to the suspension as you find yourself going 100mph all the time. Since "fullgrown" has a 2000 model year,,,, he might be in better shape.

:D S--t, my 89 Ranger handles better at 100+ than my 06 GT Stang did. And all I did was change the front springs to 94 Exploders :icon_thumby:

I wouldn't doubt it, if you pay someone to do it. A decent Explorer donar (the only way I would do it in a late model) will be a couple $K in itself.

If you want a carbed 1980's 302 and a three speed automatic... I think I am still under $1k but I still have a long way to go. I have a ugly engine on a stand that needs paint and is full of new gaskets and seals and a transmixer in the shed that is supposed to be good.

1987 302 - $200
C4/5 mutant - $200
Weiand Stealth intake - $165
Carb - Roughly $300
Gaskets/seals - $150
Duals were about $500 on my F-150 from the cats back...

...plus bolts, zip discs, wire brushes, coolant, clutch or torque converter, miscellaneous fittings, paint, mounts, fuel lines, fuel and oil filters, air filter, coolant, oil, solder, wire, heat shrink, exhaust, it goes on and on when you count parts other than the cool stuff.

There is no doubt about it,, adds up fast even if it takes 6 months to do. I did a carpet kit, headliner, seat covers and it only looks basic inside plus three necessary autometer gauges aint cheep. And if you go synthetic lubes, here we go, $40 for two bottles 75W140, butt load of ATF, even T5 holds 4.

And that all varies so much by circumstance that you can't really put a solid price on it.

As far as some of that stuff goes, it is a non-issue vs putting in another 3.0. A good donar explorer would have a lot of that stuff on it too.

I got a TC with my transmission.
