Ok,

So finally got the 302 re-built.. Needed a new crank and lower end, so a full rebuilt it was!

Finally piecing it all together and almost done but I have a foreign balancer and I cant seem to match the part# to anything online or with a dealer etc..

Its definitely not stock as the original owner of the engine said it was "breaking balancers" which I dont believe due to the broken crank..

So the flexplate, flywheel and crank (2MA) are all for a 28oz, but how do I know if my 79' 302 balancer I have is a 28oz or 50oz?? I weighed it recently and it weighed 9lbs +/- 1lb. Rockauto lists the 28oz as 11lbs and the 50oz as 8lbs so Im stuck.. and yes I know the weight isnt the actual "imbalance" of the part..

Is there any way to figure this out?

Look at the casting numbers on the balancer. If it's got an "E" for the first letter, it's a 50 oz balancer. If the crank broke due to the wrong balancer, then you definately don't want to go that route again. Comparing total weights is no way to go about it, there were many heavy(and lighter too) balancers for 28 oz 289/302's. The change over in the cranks happened sometime in 81-82. A 50 oz crank is about 12-15 pounds lighter than a 28 oz crank. I'd avoid using that aftermarket balancer until you definately know what it is.

dude.

you had the engine rebuilt, but did not balance the rotating assembly?

:icon_confused:.....

minimally i have the setup balanced, though i usually send two flex plates/flys and sometimes two balancers (if cheap ones) to have that all matched up on long engines when fully rebuilding. if its not balanced its not right:dunno:

race only depends on actuals as to whether or not i run spares. balanced at minimum though.

takes some balls not to invest in that imo...

I've rebuilt many engines and didn't have them balanced. They all came out fine. But I got a big set.:D:icon_thumby:

Im sure if you have all the pieces with the same imbalance weight it should run fine without a major rattle.. I know the flywheel, flexplate and crank are the proper ones. Ill get back to you guys with the number shortly. thanks again.

okay, so the balancer number is 5012492-290B. Any thoughts on that one guys?

That's an aftermarket balancer. You'll need to figure out the manufacturer and from there the imbalance factor. Or buy a new/reman or a good stock balancer in 28/oz
