im taking my engine apart on my 2002 ranger 4x4 to do timing chain guides. as far as i know its original engine but it doesnt have a balance shaft. does the balance shaft take place of a harmonic balancer?

No. 2WD models didn't come with a balance shaft, the 4WD models did. Not sure on the reasoning why one needed it and one didn't.
yes i understand that.but i am wondering if the engine in my truck got swapped before or if this is the original motor. not that it matters im just curious and still trying to figure out what the balance shaft does and why it was only in 4x4s and why mine doesnt have one.has anyone else ran into this

had an 04 SOHC 4x4 apart and it didn't have one either
