Bad Transmission?

So im picking up a 95 ranger 2.3 5 speed. Guy says the trans is trash. This is a coworkers truck. He says that it will start and run fine with the clutch in. But once you let off the clutch it will jolt and die like it is stuck in gear. Even if you have it in gear and try to take off it does the same thing. Any ideas on what this could be. He told me id need a trans and a driveshaft. I personally have not looked at the truck yet. But I should pick it up next week. Thanks for the help guys

is it safe to assume that the truck wont roll on it own?(back wheels locked up) if it were me i would pull the driveshaft, its not hard four bolts 12 mm 12 point if i remember correctly, and see if it rolls then. could be in the rear differential. sounds to me like the trans is stuck in two gears which would be caused by broken shift forks but thats just a guess the only way to find out is the trans apart. also really not that bad of a job just make sure you lay everything out and replace just the way you found it. i bought a video on how to rebuild them and it was nice but i think you could get by without it if your careful.

Well ive been told the driveshaft may be twisted as well. Im having it towed home tomorrow so Ill start ripping into it then. But the truck go pulled to the shop its as so the rear is just fine. Ill post up pics once I get into it.
