Bad T case

I have an 01 4.0 ranger and the chain in the case is slipping I think. Local scrap yard wants $500. $1200 for a rebuild. Is it an option to install a manual shift out of an older one????
 
Is it optional but what makes you think the chain is slipping? There are so many things more than that able to go wrong....
