Bad start to new year...

I had what might be a brain fart today....sas the front and race it in the 4x4 offroad series I'm racing in. All the lightening and glass removal has been done for me. Just need to add a cage and front suspension and go racing. Use the 460 and c-6 I have with a divorced t-case. Hhmmmmm....

I'd almost say you could rebuild what you have there. The shell looks to be good. Just be a pain to get the burnt paint off.

I bet the temper of the steel body is going to be funky though.

Probably brittle since it was on fire and sprayed with water so it was cooled down fast.

It will be anealed soft if anything. I don't beieve it would be high carbon steel like for knifes or chisels where it quenches hard. The car is a uni-body so would need a full frame anyway, and combine that with a full cage and then the body is just looks. I won't be able to take a close look until snow melt anyway. The bodies on the race trucks don't last long. This would just be better than crushing it. I envision cutting the floor out and dropping it on a truck frame, cage it and install floor. I think I would be lucky to get ~$500.00 if I parted it out.

Soft is a slow cooldown, like put in a oven and turn off oven and let it cool as the oven bleeds off heat. I see ice (thought it was melted chrome at first) hanging off the grill so I figured it was hosed with water as it and the building were in flames.

It will probably be weird no matter what though.

Well, I'm not a metalurgist, I'm just remembering shop class from 35 years ago...the memory might be a little off. lol. In any case it may be possible to use the carcass for a little bit of fun. It'll definately have a unique patina.

Manufacturing Engineering was 10 years ago. :D

Thanks.

My tools are covered by insurance and are the tools I use the least so I will not suffer work-wise. All my auto parts are not covered, it's a set back but not the end of the world. We'll see how insurance decides on payment method. If I have to buy first and then get reimbursed I'll be screwed as I have no savings and am close to max on credit. I need to look at the torino closely before I decide on what I'm doing with it. I'm contemplating using the body for an off road race vehicle [mud or sand drags?] as there would probably be too much work involved to bring back to road legal. If I go that route I'll be looking for a cheap 4x4 truck frame with good axles and brakes. I already have a 460/c6 to use.

Damn man! Sorry to hear that.
Its a shame about the Torino (beautiful car), but those are metals, at least you and your family are ok.

Sorry to about this tragedy but glad critical/intelligent thinking is positive way to deal with it :icon_thumby:

Carry on, sir :icon_welder:-

Sorry! That's some bad luck. I think it is homeowner insurance that covers garages and some of the content but not anything that is used on the road or recreational. My first car was a 68 Torino fastback, still like them but can't afford one.

The getcha there is cars have their own identity. So a project car with no insurance on itself is kinda outta luck.

Yes, definately no insurance for the car. And the storage was on a buddies property and my homeowners didn't have a rider for it. And I won't use my buddies insurance because not right.

Some prelim research on wheelbases; 68 Torino = 116" and ford truck wheelbases = http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/Wheelbases.shtml

If I do this I'll probably go for a longer wheelbase so I don't have as much overhang front and back.
