ok guys so i rebuilt the rear diff about 4 years ago and its bad again.....
its a 4x4 with stock 4.10's.....i found a 7.5 rear with 3.73 for cheap.....
i know i should keep both gears the same but money is tight and i need the truck for work....how bad is it on the 4x4? i dont use it often and never over 15mph....

horrible, you'll blow that 7.5 to hell.

just take out the rear gears and drive it in 4x4 front wheel drive for a few days. but if your gonna invest money, do it right the first time. no sense spending a little here to still have to spend more later.

I would pick up the 7.5 and throw it under there until you can find an 8.8 that matches your truck. If you do that though, you would absolutely not be able to use 4x4.

Well, the axles, drive shafts, u-joints and transfer case on the Ranger are all pretty well matched, so it is anyone's guess what you WILL break.

If you don't use it often you can get away with changing one axle at a time, but you will have to match ratios again before you even think about using the 4x4. So much so that if it were my truck, and I was going to do exactly this before I found a front axle with the gears I want, that I would remove the front drive shaft until I can match the gears again.

4 years is not that bad. If you are going to keep that 7.5 you need to match the gears so the truck will be more efficient and run better off road. You should be able to find a nice clean 8.8 for under $400 with a 4:10. I run 33's and run a 4:10 and love the performance (I have a 4.0 motor). You need to call your local scrap yard and check on Craigslist. Maybe somebody here has one close by to you. Anybody??

ok guys so stick with a 4.10.....i've been looking local and i see a 7.5 and a 8.8 both with a 4.10 and 10" brakes (like mine) both are about the same money and both out of rangers
whitch would you swap in?

I would go with the 8.8.

What are you doing to bust these things up? Even the 7.5 on a stockish truck should hold up pretty good.

The 8.8 is a lot better axle. You'll be doing this again for sure if you put another 7.5 in there.

the last time i had the rearend rebuilt and thay said the locker was sticking...it was about 100 bucks cheaper to rebuild last time but it seems its cheaper to swap this time

I bought and installed what I thought were 4.10 d-28 and 7.5 in a b-II with a 4.0l. It ended up the 7.5 was 3.73. Having no options, I drove it like that for two summers, but not a lot of miles, before blowing the rear end. I would say you are ok for a short time, especially if you stay out of 4x4.

the cost of a 7.5 with 4.10's is the same as with 3.73's and both come from rangers....
the 3.73 axle has 9" brakes the 4.10 has 10" brakes.....my ranger has factory 10' brakes.... i work as a framer and my truck earns a pay check too.....i have been known to have to use 4x4 to get in and out of a job site and even had to drag a coworker out of a site...it doesnt make sence to swap a 3.73 and have a 2x4.....
