This is for all you out there that have had weird noises when only in 4wd which can be described in many different ways.
I was experiencing sone clanking, grinding and just plain unawesome sounds when in 4wd, only when the transfer case was engaged. I have manual hubs and an auto 1354 transfer case.
At first I thought it might be something to do with the differential, but I dismantled that and everything looked peachy keen. So while changing out my transmission recently I decided to check the front driveshaft seeing as it had to come out anyways! I found out that the double carson joint was worse as worse can get, rust thickly coated the needle bearing and in return I experienced all of said unawesome sounds when in 4wd.
replaced the the driveshaft with a good one from the junker for $45, and I now have 4wd. I do plan on rebuilding my current driveshaft with new ujoints and a new double cardon joint but that can be done in the heat of the summer!!!!
so lesson learned CHECK your double carson joint as it can tend to be forgotten and neglected.
