Bad Booster

The wife just got home and said her brakes made a noise? I just replaced the pads and a rotor a couple of months ago. Calipers are only about three years old. I took it for a ride around the block and brakes seem to be working OK except I did notice when I pushed the pedal I can hear some air so I'm thinking the booster is going or gone! It is a 94 Explorer with 180000 miles. Will the brakes stop working without the booster or just not work as well?

Without the booster, your brakes would feel like the engine is off.

Replace your check valve. Cheap part. The valve can go bad, or the rubber grommet cracks.

Normally that's the problem. I've seen boosters go bad, but it's not usual the first thing......

Be sure to check the underside of the grommet as well. That's where ours split. Looked great until I reached under it.

Its a good form of leg exercise if you remove that booster. Nothing to worry, its just your booster is growing old.
