What would cause backfiring, sputtering under load? Runs alright but not perfect when just cruising on level ground but as soon as have to give it gas on an incline/hill it stutters and mostly in 2nd it will backfire. Does it hot or cold.

my brother 97 2.3 lima has an bad egr valve and has the same problem except for the backfiring we have a joke about the poor thing when he drive he will put into 5th gear at 40 and if kicks like mother ****er that probaly your issue that or and maf is dirty or bad try cleaning those parts and some seaform or marvel mystery oil in the gas.

Cleaned MAF short time ago when I had similar problem so it's at least clean, not sure it's working properly though. I did pull off EGR when I had to replace exhaust gaskets. Pulled it from intake not exhaust pipe. Testing EGR now and it's holding vacuum. Went to test FPR but damn pressure gauge is broke.

my maf just broke on my 93 4.0 i had cleaned it to but there was an check engine light so in your case i would use some seaform though the brake booster to clean everything and that Might just do it
