Backfire through throttle body

Working on a 86 toyota 4 cylinder 22re efi pickup truck
Timing jumped a tooth or so and broke one of guides and cover. We replaced everything timed it up crankshaft key at 12 o clock and camshaft dot line up with top dot on cam and with the rotor pointed at #1 spark plug. But we didn't use the two bright links on the chain we just put it on there. Does this have anything to do with it backfiring through the intake/throttle body, or did i time it wrong some how? If so how should I do it thanks.
 
well when i had my 2.3L ranger rebuilt when we put everything back on we had it timed in advance too much and it backfired through the carb....so if i had to guess i would say that your timing is advanced.
 
Those links are just to help see the chain against the marks I think- no big deal. You should have both timing marks as you said- then rotate the engine its normal direction of travel with the number 1 sparkplug out of its hole. Put a finger in the hole as it rotates until you feel compression. Then watch for the crankshaft timing mark to come around to TDC. THEN drop the distributor in pointing at number 1 on the dist cap. This prevents it from being 180 degrees off. You can set the ignition timing without cranking the engine by moving the crankshaft timing mark over to where the timing is set (8 degrees for example), taking the dist cap off, and rotate the whole dist until the star thiny and igniter are perfectly lined up. Put the cap on and see what you have. You may also have a sparkplug wire in the wrong order, check that as well.

Alright so I have the crankshaft key at 12 o clock and the cam dot, then i should put on the pulley for crankshaft and time the notch on that, or with the key of the crankshaft?
And if it was of by 8 degrees it would have that type of reaction though?
I checked spark plug wires they are in order Thanks
