Could a bad coil cause these symptoms? I think this thing is chucking out coils cause there's one behind the seat that definitely been used but not for that long.my ballast resistor should be bolted on metal right? Its on the plastic fender well right now. I'm never ever going to have time to do this shit I hate it so I convinced the boss man to let me get some of the things I need while working but around here businesses legally have to be closed on sunday even walmart for half the day. Anyways a bit of input on the coil idea would he great I th Ink I can manage to find one tomorrow. And yes I know I'm chasing my tail without the light but work with me a bit I'm doing what I can

Test the coil, test the pug wires...can't tell you how to test the solid state ignition you put in, but it probably does need to be grounded to metal somewhere. Sounds like you have at least two problems going on at the same time...ignition and carb. Hate to sound like a harpy, but you gotta get the base timing right and spark solid before you do much else. It's a slow but logical process that gets results if you can get the time to do it and report back.

Success! Dizzy was off 180 give or take 25 30 degrees. And this is not a 95 motor ita an 87 so the firing order was wrong pulled off the valve cover turned it over by hand and watched where we knew tdc was on the compression stroke. Got it sealed up wouldnt start so did some digging on the internet and found a different firing order. Tried it out fired on all cylinders riggt away. Oh we also found out the spark was being double resisted down to 5 volts. So we took one out got the propet 9 volts to the coil now. Also comptrssion was good 125 give or take a few psi on each cylinder not sure why that was could have been my batt dieing. Also replacibg coil starts running shitty after getting hot. Almost there coil timing light and carb tune tomorrow!

Got it timed finally I set it at 14* I know the book says 10 but after some digging found that they have some more pep at 12 or 13 and with a cam I feel safe at 14. No vacuum gauge tuning but I think I got it where it needs to be or at least close. But still having some issues when she gets hot carb spacer and fuel line insulation coming up next. Thanks a lot guys couldn't have done it without you. Feel kind of like a trs outcast now that I'm in a full size but I don't really wanna go anywhere else. :D

Mine runs better at 11 or 12 but doesn't hot start well, 10* seems to be a good balance for me.

Start by setting at the recommended base timing...go back to 10, then put a vacuum gauge on it and balance your carb. Once the carb is balanced, advance the timing a little...test drive...repeat, repeat, until you find where it runs best. And it will be hard to start hot if you go too far, carb spacer or not. These things have to work together in synch, they can't communicate with each other...there is no computer to gather data and provide feedback and then adjust things.
