I currently have the motor pulled from my Mazda B3000 3.0l 2wd

Last year I bought a 5.0l from a 98 or 99 explorer AWD. When I bought the motor I also got the transmission wiring harness and ECU.

Since I bought the motor I have torn it all the way down. I put in a E303 cam new forged pistons replaced all the bearings and built it back up.

I now have the motor fully built and ready to install but I ran into one minor detail. I have an AWD transmission. Well so I thought I could just go out and buy a slightly used 2wd 4R70W so that is what I did. So I bolted up the 2wd tranny only to run into another miner detail. The Engine wiring harness does not match the 2wd tranny which figures. So i figured I could fix this problem by looking for a 5.0l 2wd explorer wiring harness turns out I cant find one anywhere and the part has been discontinued from the dealership of course.

So now I have a 4r70w AWD that does not work and a 4r70w 2wd that also does not work.

Any suggestions would be great I am hoping to finish this in the next week or two.

Thanks for your help this is my first post on The Ranger Station and I hope i didn't screw anything up.

Look for a 5.0 Mustang ECU and harness...it should work then..

Why not ditch the 4r70w and get a AOD or C4? That seems to me the best and most reasonable way to get it in AOD will prob be your best Bet.. Im not sure but does your truck get its speed reading off the rear end??? If so an AOD or a C4 would work with o problems except a trans code

Thanks I will look into that.

I am also going to see if I can dig out some pictures of the rebuild and post them up so people can see what I have done.

I think it would be easier to make the ones work that I have rather then sell them and look for a decent AOD or C4.

Thanks for the help if I can't get anything to work with the 4R70W's this is the route I am left with.

I just got some connections with the entire southern half of Missouri so I may have some luck there.

Within any given year, the harness for the Explorer AWD 4R70W is identical to that of the 2WD 4R70W transmission. The problem is that there were 4 different harness pinouts over the years: 96 only, 97 only, 98 only and 99~2001. In addition, some of the transmission hardware and controls also evolved. You need to use the correct year transmission and transmission harness that matches the engine harness / PCM that you are using.

Ok thanks, here is the issue I have then my motor is 99-2001 it is returnless. However the 2wd tranny I have is from a 1997. I bought it thinking they probably didn't change anything within the tranny's (well apparently that was a mistake).

So my question is there a way to cross reference the pinouts and make the combination I have work or am I SOL.

Your 97 transmission also has the wrong Transmission Range Sensor (8-pin). The TRS is what tells the PCM what gear the transmission selector is in. The later trans has the 12-pin Digital Transmission Range Sensor. Your 99~01 PCM needs the 12-pin DTRS and cannot read the 8-pin TRS. Obviously, the harness connector for the Range Sensor is also different.

I don't know enough about the 4R70W to say that you could just swap in the 99~01 harness and DTRS and everything would be OK. I suspect that could be the case but I am unsure.

Another thing to think about - the 4R70W got some very worthwhile internal improvements in 98/99 timeframe. I know that this isn't what you want to hear but finding a 99~01 2WD Ex 4R70W would definitely be your best solution.

Thanks a lot I guess next thing is to list my transmissions for sale.
I am going to go ahead and look for the 1999 transmission and hopefully it will be plug and play from there. I have read about the improvements in the 98 98 trannys and kind of wished I had bought a newer one anyway.

Thanks again everyone for all the help.

Yes there is. Which plug are you looking for the pin location on. The MLPS or the white one on the pass side? Here is the pin locations for the white plug and thelocations for the 8 pin MLPS.
MLPS= Manuel lever position sensor
