What are the main differences? The bed looks different where it meets the cab, is it so? What parts are interchangeable? Is the engine a Mazda or a Ford?

they are the same, some body parts are different. but mech parts are interchangable. even the cabs are the same minus the window trim.

From 94' on you're looking at a ford ranger with a different grille and outer sheet metal. The inner steel, frame, cab, driveline, etc are all interchangeable.

I am on the hunt for a camper shell (used) and would like to make sure I do not get the worng one. The bed (at the cab) appears narrower than a Ranger's, is it so?

I don't think. A Mazda bed will bolt in place of a ranger's and vice versa. The wheel wells are just different.

I believe I read that the inner edge of the bed rails are the same on both, but the width of the rails themselves might be different. So any Ranger shell should fit on without a problem, it just might not sit flush with the outer edge of the bed.
