I have noticed a big difference in acceleration between a 94 B3000 3.0L Auto and a 92 Ranger XLT 3.0L Auto.

Based on the label in the B3000, it has a Limited Slip Differential with 3.73 ratio (Code F6).

Based on the label in the Ranger, it has a Differential with 3.45 ratio (Code 84).

Would that gearing have an affect on acceleration?

Sam

providing both trucks have the same size tires, the deeper geared truck (3.73) will feel considerably more powerful.

3.0 loves high rpm's, a 3.73 gearing would effect acceleration more.

OK, the Ranger has 15 inch wheels on it, and the Mazda has 14 inch wheels. So, between the gearing and the smaller wheels, the Mazda should accelerate better than the Ranger. (It doesn't)

The big difference which is probably causing the performance difference is the Mazda has 211,000 miles on it, and the Ranger has only 87,000 on it's engine. I guess I just didn't realize that the Mazda was slowly dieing of old age, until I got the Ranger. The Mazda is also an extended cab (extra weight) while the Ranger isn't

I have a complete spare 3.0 out of a 93 Ranger. I think it would be worth rebuilding and dropping it in the Mazda. Now after this thread, I am convinced of it.

Thanks,

Sam

Does the mazda have a auto tranny and the ranger a 5spd? If so, this could make the difference.

The WHEEL diameter doesn't particularly affect acceleration in this case, the TIRE OUTSIDE DIAMETER does.

Well shit....he did say they were both auto.
