If i put 31x10.5 R15 tires, will that be hard on my transmission?

More than likely you have 3.08 gears.
31s won't be a problem but with the 3.08s you're going to lose some oomph.
Fortunately, the fix is as close as your nearest junkyard.
Ranger axles with 3.73 gears are as plentiful as new government Czars and much cheaper to boot!
If you need more strength, Explorer axles go in with a bit of work and the 3.73 is very common there as well.

you might want to use the calculators in the Tech Library. there is good information there that will help you decide which gears you need depending on what you're doing with your rbv.
