Hi all,

I have a 95 4.0 2WD Ranger. When inspecting the rear axle bearings, how much up/down slop is allowed? And How much "in/out" axle movement is allowed?

Also, I have 107K on her and about 2x a year I attach an overhead camper. This camper ways about 1000 pounds loaded. I use the Air Lift air bags to keep her sturdy, upgraded to 15" wheels with heaver load tires. Does anyone else do something similar? Any problems that have arisen?

Thanks for your help,
Bob

There should be basically zero up/down movement in the rear wheel bearings. A small amount of in/out end play is acceptable however (up to 1/8" or so). if there's a large amount of in/out play, you should replace the clutch stacks in your limited-slip differential.

Thanks! I think I will have a beer....

I would say that there is about 1/16" up down movement. Maybe slightly more. The in/out is about 1/8" but not greater. I think I will setup my dial indicator to get it right.

My Chilton manual does not indicate what the allowable slop can be. Is this information found in the Ford shop manual? If so, I think I should invest in it.
