I was helping this old guy clean out his Garage and he had a Jerry can from WWII, he said it came off of his Jeep in his Cavalier Unit, and hes had it ever since. I asked him if he would sell it, he replied, no, Im not in the business of making money take it, I told him Thank you very much and finished helping him clean his Garage. How do I go about Cleaning the Inside? Im going to Spray it Black also.

WAIT!

I know you want to make it look gooood......but, you might ruin it historically....

That might not mean much to you right now....but it's a part of history the way it looks right now...

Get some more opinions before you sand/repaint it......:headbang:

+1 that thing is wicked cool the way it is.

I have MANY Historical Items, but I didnt think a Gas Can could be worth money?
The Writing is imprinted on the Can too so it wouldent go away.

& Sorry for the Blurry Pics, I dropped my phone.

man, i'd leave it alone and hang it in your garage/shop! or in your room!
i'd love to score one like that to do a display with it.

You guys are starting to convince to not even touch the thing haha, but seriously is it worth money or is just a sentimental thing?

Its just a gas can, so its value would be limited, but these sorta things are collectors items more than something to sell.

It looks to be in nice shape, I would be very hesitant to use it when you can get a 5-gallon can from Walmart for like $15.
I say clean it up, and put it on display in your house.

I have one also. It is a flat green color just as it was in WWII and Korea...my dad brought it back from Korea and gave it to me when I was a teen. It is over at my dad boat house where it sits forever. We put gas in it once in awhile!! You need to cream the inside to get rid of all the rust. Go to a hardware store or a motorcycle shop and ask them about what to use to clean it out. Media blasting will clean the out side and then paint it. You might be able to media blast the inside but the cream will seal it so not leaks will occur. I used that stuff on motorcycle gas tanks years ago.

It Doesnt leak and there is no rust on the inside, it has a Tan coating of some sort, and i stuck my hand in and felt all around and also looked inside of it.

Throw some mineral spirits in there with a couple shop rags. Seal it up good and shake it around for awhile, let it sit, shake it around. After a few times like this, it should be as clean as you'll ever need it. Dump out the mineral spirits, throw in some dish soap and water, agitate that and rinse it out. Fog the inside with WD40 to protect it and leave it alone. Clean the outside, but DON'T sand or use abrasives. Rinse, dry, spray some wax on it and buff it out.

Collector's item.
