So I spent all week doing a tranny swap on my truck. Got the 10-inch clutch, got an M5 in, got it running nice, everything seems ok. Go to stop for gas, won't start. The starter runs, but the drive doesn't kick out and I have to get back to school to finish a project. Ok, no big, I pop start, drive it back up, and check my wires/get a new starter since I have the life-time warranty. Get a few miles into the trip, clutch hydraulics give out, guessing that I didn't get all the air out. It seemed great when I pulled out of the garage, 15 miles into my trip to school (and after a few miles of running around town) I can still get a full pedal I just gotta pull it out a bit, still lets me shift. 25 miles in, I have no pedal until the last inch, so I gotta speed shift, still no big deal, I just can't stop.

63 miles in, all driven with two windows open and a hole in my floor that I haven't gotten closed up yet, I hit a red light. No pedal, no starter, no go. Hop out, get it rolling just enough to pop it back in gear, make it to the next light, Red! Can't get it in this time.

Fortunately my girlfriend was right behind me the whole time. So now my truck is just past the half line, won't fire up, won't shift, and I gotta get her up to school so I can try to re-bleed this thing and see if it'll work. If not, I get to have another two days of fun replacing the slave at Christmas.:annoyed:

Anyone want to help?:icon_thumby:

Did you reuse a used slave cylinder?

The slave cylinders in the m5od's do not like being reused. My cousin works at a tranny shop, and he said most cars can be reused, but in all Rangers and Explorers etc, with this tranny, they replace the slave cyl when doing anything that requires removing the tranny. If they don't, it will be be back with failures, shortly after the costumer gets it.

Huh... I've reused my slave on three different tranny's so far.

I did reuse it, but it's not that old. It was replaced just over a year ago. I was in a rush to get done and I think I didn't get all the air out. I've driven with an outright bad slave and with air in the lines and this really feels more like air than it does a bad slave. I'm going to go back later today and try to bleed it out some more, and then if it doesn't work I'll have to go replace the slave.

as long as its not far away or something i'd help.

Its probably a bit farther than you'd want to travel. I'm about 2 hours from the Jersey Line.

I just did my clutch and redid the slave with a new one. I have been having pedal problems with mine too. I think I have bleed it with two bottles of fluid already and it still keeps getting soft after it gets hot. At least I am not having starter problems. Twice now I have had to start it in gear to get off from a red light. Parked again right now and I am about ready to pull the trany again.

So I got down to the lot where my truck is and found 2 important things.

1) The guy that sold it to me was either mistaken or outright lied about the age of the slave cylinder. When I started bleeding it the fluid that was coming out looked like used motor oil, it was that old. That thing was definitely not replaced just last year.

2) The master cylinder is leaking where the push rod goes into it. There is brake fluid on the master inside the cab. Tomorrow I'm going back with a buddy, gonna replace the master and bleed it out again, if I can get a half decent pedal I will try to drive it home and worry about my other problems then. If I can't, I guess I call my roadside and get it towed somewhere, hopefully close enough that i can then get it towed or pushed back to my place if they won't just take it there to begin with.

No matter the results of the MC replacement, I'm definitely replacing the slave over Christmas break. It shouldn't be quite as hard and I should be able to do it in a day. Not worth the worry to not do it ASAP.

IT LIVES!!! I went down today to swap masters, found the carpet soaked with brake fluid around the pedals. Put the old MC back on, bled it out, pop started it, and drove home.

:yahoo::yahoo::yahoo:

I still need to get a new starter and un-rig the wiring for it so its closer to 4.0 stock wiring. At least I got the lifetime warranty on it.
