I'm shopping for a Ranger. I definetly want a 2.3L 4cyl. I would definetly prefer a 5spd manual trans but I've seen some nice ones with the 5 spd automatic trans.
Are these decent transmissions? Any known issues? It opens my options up if I go with the auto or manual trans.
Thanks, Todd

I'd recommend sticking with a stick shift.
These Ford automatic transmissions can last a long time, but you never know how the previous owner treated it.

Of course, the MO5D does have its issues as well, typically the slave cylinder will give you trouble.

I've been milking my OEM slave for a couple years now (140k miles). It'll occasionally creep on me with the pedal depressed. I simply shut off the engine, depress the clutch and slip my foot off the pedal so it slams up. I do that a few times and it's good for months. Don't let its reservoir get low! You have to remove the cap and the rubber seal to really check its level.

With the Duratec 2.3, the auto trans comes with a significant fuel economy penalty compared to the manual trans, ( auto trans trucks typically see a best of mid 20s mpgs while the manual gets 30ish with a decent driver) and is reported to feel slower. The factory equipped the auto trans trucks with 4.10 rear gears, which contributes to both the poorer fuel economy and the sluggish performance.

As far as durability, the auto isnt anything to worry about, but its not quite as robust as the manual either. The auto isnt a terrible option, but it's not the best option. Id say waiting for the manual is the way to go.
