On my 88, the floor shifter does not "lock" into position. By that I mean I do not have to use the button on the handle to shift. Just grab `n go. looks like maybe a spring is broken or missing that moves the piece into position lock??? Is there an exploded view of this somewhere? Thanks for any input!

Google: 1988 ford automatic floor shifter, mechanism parts will be the same for cars or trucks around that year

You may find some drawings but it most likely won't help you, because there will be no replacement parts.
Best if you just start taking it apart until you find the problem, but there still won't be replacement parts so you will need to MacGyver a fix.

Overall I would suggest changing to a 3rd Party floor shifter, there are many Column shifter to Floor shifter conversion How-Tos out there, and you are more than half way there since you already have a floor shifter, and are just changing from linkage to cable shift :)
