I have a 1993 Explorer, with an automatic transmission, and a column shift. I have a B&M shifter with cable I would like to install. What I plan on doing is running the cable through the floor, making sure it is kink free, hook up the cable to the tranny, bolt down the shifter and try it out, and adjust as necessary. Now what im worried about is, I went to a local auto parts store to check if they had vehicle specific cables, which they dont, just different lengths. But the package said if you dont hook it up correctly, you can ruin your cable, and your transmission in one shift. How is that possible?

is the shifter you have set up for an OD trans. or a 3 speed auto?
on some it makes a diff. some dont.

if you bought it used google it and see if its compatable with your trans.you can also use jegs or summit.look up the shifter model and check the specs.

the cables wont be vehicle specific but the brackets to fit it to your tranny WILL be.bought mine at summit about $20 to $30.i have never set one up on a OD trans so iam really no help there.

The shifter is set up for a 3 speed auto. I never use my over drive. I got the shifter out of my 86 Ranger with a 302 that has become a parts truck. I never installed it, bought the truck with it. But would like it in my Explorer. I will need to either buy, or make my own piece to thread on the end of the cable that hooks onto the tranny shifter thing that kicks it into gears. Or, if I could take the tranny shifter thing off of the Ranger, and put it onto the Explorer tranny, then I could use the threaded piece I got from the Ranger. And about that bracket, I havent been able to find one for the A4LD tranny, so I figure I am going to have to make my own.

sounds like a plan on the cable end.
i dont know how it hooks to the trans shifter ear on the OD as iam running a c4 so like i said not much help there or the damange it will cause not using OD in that trans.
on my truck i just looped the extra cable around the top of the trans . and the tunnel making sure i had a stright shot out of the shifter and the bracket at the trans shifter arm to keep it from binding because the cable is solid at both ends with wire cable in between.

not much........but i hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. I really appreciate it. I will take pictures of the tranny setup an all that tomorrow, I have no problem making a custom bracket, its part of my day job.

The only way you could ruin your tranny "in one shift" is if it was out of adjustment and you threw it into reverse my mistake doing about 100.

Thats the only thing I could think of, but I guess I just wanted reassurance.
