Automatic 4x4 will not engage.

I've got a 92 Ranger XLT 4.0L 4X4, it has the OEM automatic 4x4 hubs activated by the button on the dash.

It used to function okay, a little bit of clunking in 4x4... But now it has just stopped engaging.

When I press the 4x4 button I can hear a "click" from something like a relay behind the drivers seat, but the light doesn't blink on the dash and nothing happens.

Any ideas?

you may have a bad shift motor.

There's a thing about cleaning the shift motor somewhere in the tech library.
