I just bought a 91 ranger 2.9 5 speed with an autoshift transfer case. The problem is the shift motor is burned out. I have a manuel transfer case out of an earliar BII project and was wondering if I could just swap them out with a little trimming here and there. Would that work or would I have to switch the auto lock hubs too?

Swapping them will be fine if both are the same model. Your Ranger should have a 1354. The BII case is probably a 1350. The front driveshaft connections are different on the T-cases.

No, the Ranger will likely have a 1350.

You'll probably have to pull up the carpet and swap the plate on the trans hump. Or you can try to measure and cut a hole for the shifter, but I'd recommend changing the plate. Just look in the junkyard for a manual trans Ranger in the 89-92 range with a manual t-case. I *think* the plate out of an 89 or 90 BII would be the same, but I don't know for sure. I have no idea if an older plate will swap or not.

If the BII has an auto trans, the shift lever for the t-case may not come up in the correct spot. I ran into that problem, I tried putting one stamped A4LD on a FM-145, it works, but I have a rag stuffed in the hole for now. It's just my choptop anyway, lol.

^^^ the ranger will have a 1350. the 1354 was put in rangers till 92 and they had to have a 4.0 motor

Do NOT shift into 4WD while moving with a manual case and Automatic hubs.

The manual case does not have the clutch to get everything up to speed prior to the engagement.

When I shift into 4x4 with the transfer case i'll still have to hit the button the lock in the hubs right?

If you have auto front hubs, they will (supposedly) automatically lock up. No need to push a button or anything. The buttons for the 4x4 from the electric transfer case were just to engage the transfer case and light up the lights on the dash, nothing more.

If you have manual front hubs, you have to get out and lock them in.
