Hey all, new guy here.

Question:

Noticed this for the first time today; From park to drive, a single, squeak! Park to reverse normal, reverse to drive, again a single, squeak. Temp does not matter. It's coming from right underneath driver/mid vehicle area. Totally repeatable with engagement of forward gear.

Noticed what I thought was slippage a couple times over the past 6 weeks as well. ATF is good but probably could use replace with filter.

This the converter??

If wondering which box, I have not looked for the PN on it. 1999 XLT extened, 3.0FI FLEX, 4X4, 4SPD (w/overdrive). Someone probably already knows the PN. No mods daily driver well kept, unless KN cold air kit considered a mod.... :)

I did search for this but did not find exactly what I'm aksing, but it cannot be the first time it's been ask. Thanks in advance. I can get that box number if we need it.

Jeff

Squeaks are u-joints.. almost always.

i agree on u-joints, but since it only happens in 1 direction it could also be the trans mount bushings

I guess I should revise my "squeak"..

After some attention today, the sound is actually a "ZZZeeeeuuulllttt" into drive. If I move to N "Zeeett". Normal reverse. If it is left in neutral to sit for a short period it does not make a sound, but engagement is normal. It does engage fine however all the time. Then once placed back into drive repeatedly from NPR whatever, I get the sound again.

This sounds like hydrolics. I've heard unhappy hydrolics that made similar sounds when in need of new pump parts or seals?

Thoughts?

Jeff

Do one of the moderators need to move this discussion?

lolwut? i can't even imagine the sound that ZZZeeeeuuulllttt describes. can you try to get a recording or video?

Yah, that's a tuff one. Not really sure how best to describe the sound. Not sure how I would capture it on audio either.

Anyway joints are good as well as bushings. Let me get more info. I need to see what the trannie code is as well. I'm kind making a half assed effort here.

Looks like one of the moderators is trying to build a FAQ in the transmissions area. So it would probably be helpful. As I said I have heard worn and stalled hydrolics that whine like this. This is just repeatable and momentary.
