auto trans wont go in gear

i have a 94 with an automatic. a few times, when trans is cold, if i stop and put in reverse it wont go in gear. seems like still in neutral. move lever through gears and it will then go in gear, then shifts fine. today i stopped at light and when i tryed to go it was like trans was in neutral, lever in drive position. after a few minutes of moving lever it went in gear and worked fine. any thoughts?

sounds like it is going out on you, might need to have it rebuilt, maybe easier/cheaper to replace though.

I could be wrong, me not being a tranny-mechanic, but thats just the way it sounds.

A new transmission with sand in it will do the same thing =P my buddy learned that with his Jeep!

Could be your shift linkage or your bands need to be adjusted, Check the tech library for diagnosis. Good luck. Lucas tranny conditioner/ slip fix helped mine.
