Do the auto trans radiators in Rangers have trans coolers in them(the radiator)? If they do, is there any reason that they couldn't be used as an oil cooler for the engine?

Can't say I know what temps the oil runs at normally, but I'd imagine it'd run a bit cooler if it went through such a thing? And lot's of low speed operation can't be all that good for engine oil temps, either.

The automatics in Rangers should have the cooler built-in the radiator. On the newer models, I think they are apart now. As for oil cooling, there is an adapter kit you can buy that will screw on where the oil filter is and route hoses to a cooler (oil filter is still used). If you use a Fram equilivent of a PH8, Ph3600, it will work.

FYI, last time I checked oil temps, it was at 190*F.

As a general rule oil temp should be 30-40 hotter than coolant. Also the oil temp will rise before the coolant in an overheat situation.

The transmission oil cooler simply isn't big enough to flow the oil the engine needs to flow.

You need an oil cooler with significant;y larger ports.

Typically a trans cooler has 3/8" diameter ports
engine oil coolers usually have 1/2" or 5/8" and sometimes 3/4" ports.

Even a 1/2" cooler has easily twice the oil flow capacity of a 3/8" unit.

I have an A/T radiator in my 4.0/5sp truck.

I use the tranny cooler to cool my Power Steering.
